A tornado is a rotating column of air. They are more common in some areas than in others. Tornadoes can have wind speeds up to 300 miles (480 km) per hour. They can stretch more than 2 miles (3.2 km) wide. Extreme tornadoes stay on or near the ground for up to 100 miles (160 km).
